3 + 2 + 1 = 6
  1. Goal: calculate 348 + 275.
  2. Align ones, tens and hundreds. Start on the right.
  3. 8 + 5 = 13. Write 3 in the ones column. Exchange 10 ones for 1 ten: write a small 1 above the tens. This is the carry.
  4. 4 + 7 + the carried 1 = 12. Cross out the used carry. Write 2 in the tens column and a new small 1 above the hundreds.
  5. 3 + 2 + the carried 1 = 6. Cross out the used carry and write 6 in the hundreds column. The answer is 623.
  6. Check: 623 − 275 = 348. The crossed-out carries have already been included.
