Worked example
- Goal: calculate 34 × 6.
- Which numbers do we need and which operation fits?
- Write 6 under the ones digit 4. Start with the ones.
- 6 × 4 = 24. Write 4 in the ones column. Exchange 20 ones for 2 tens: write a small 2 above the tens as a carry.
- 6 × 3 = 18 tens. Add the carried 2 tens: 18 + 2 = 20 tens. Cross out the carry. Write 20 to the left of 4: the answer is 204.
- Check: 204 ÷ 6 = 34. The crossed-out carry has already been included.
