4 − 1 = 3
  1. Goal: calculate 523 − 148.
  2. Align ones, tens and hundreds. Start on the right.
  3. 3 ones are not enough to subtract 8. Exchange 1 ten for 10 ones: cross out 2 and write 1 above it. Cross out 3 and write 13 above it. 13 − 8 = 5: write 5 in the ones column.
  4. Only 1 ten remains, but we need to subtract 4. Exchange 1 hundred for 10 tens: cross out 5 and write 4 above it. Cross out the small 1 and write 11. 11 − 4 = 7: write 7 in the tens column.
  5. 4 hundreds remain. 4 − 1 = 3: write 3 in the hundreds column. The answer is 375.
  6. Check: 375 + 148 = 523. Regrouping changed the parts, not the value of the number.
