Worked example step by step

Short division 156 ÷ 4: 4 does not go into 1. 4 into 15 goes 3 times (12), remainder 3. Bring down 6 → 36. 4 into 36 goes 9 times. Answer: 39. Check: 39 × 4 = 156. With a remainder: 29 ÷ 4 = 7 r 1, since 7 × 4 = 28.

    Common mistakes and how to fix them

    Common mistakes: the remainder is bigger than the divisor (it goes once more), a zero in the answer is forgotten (412 ÷ 4 = 103, not 13), or pupils divide the wrong way round. Always do the multiplication check and ask: "Is the remainder smaller than what I divide by?"

      What suits which grade?

      Grade 2: sharing into equal groups with pictures. Grade 3: division as the inverse of tables 2–5 and 10. Grade 4: short division by one digit. Grades 5–6: remainders, decimals and two-digit numbers.
