Addition worksheets
Addition is the base of all arithmetic. Start within 10, move on to bridging ten within 20, then column addition with larger numbers.

Strategies that make addition easy
Learn number bonds to ten first (7 + 3, 6 + 4). Then pupils can bridge ten: 8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 13. Near doubles help too: 6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1. Always start with the bigger number and count on.
Worked example step by step
Column addition 347 + 285: ones 7 + 5 = 12, write 2 and carry 1 above the tens. Tens 4 + 8 + 1 = 13, write 3 and carry 1. Hundreds 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. Answer: 632. Check with an estimate: 350 + 290 ≈ 640.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
The most common mistake is forgetting the carried digit or misaligning the numbers so ones sit under tens. Have pupils line up the ones on the right and draw a small box for the carry. An estimate before calculating reveals unreasonable answers.
What suits which grade?
Grade 1: within 10, then 20. Grade 2: within 100 with bridging. Grade 3: column addition to 1,000. Grade 4: to 10,000. Grades 5–6: large numbers and decimals.
